Gross National Happiness
Gross National Happiness (GNH) is a unique development philosophy pioneered by Bhutan, emphasising holistic well-being over purely economic growth. Coined by Bhutan’s fourth King, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, in the 1970s, GNH focuses on balancing material progress with spiritual, emotional, and environmental well-being.
Investment in Cryptocurrency
In a surprising turn, Bhutan has ventured into cryptocurrency investments- thanks to its clean and cheap hydroelectricity. This bold move positions the nation as a potential player in the digital economy, showcasing its ability to embrace innovation while staying true to its cultural ethos.
Youth Migration Challenges
Bhutan faces an exodus of its youth, seeking education and opportunities abroad. Countries like Australia are key destinations for these talented individuals. While this creates potential for international collaboration and remittances, it also calls for solutions to engage and retain Bhutanese youth within the nation, ensuring their skills contribute directly to national growth.
Gelephu Mindful City Initiative
With its roots in GNH, Bhutan’s development philosophy emphasises well-being over GDP. The Gelephu Mindful City (GMC) initiative embodies this vision by integrating mindfulness, sustainability, and community-centric planning. It’s a forward-thinking approach that resonates with global efforts to create liveable, resilient city.
The GMC is a hopeful step in showing how Bhutan can navigate the crossroads of development and tradition, at the same time addressing the youth migration.
