Transactional and Transformational Leaders from Business Information Systems perspective.

Having been a tutor for INB 101 Impact of IT (in Business) at QUT, my interest in Information Systems, Business Intelligence (BI), Business Process Management (BPM) and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is ever growing. Business Latency Innovation (or Business Analysis Latency) is particularly of high interest.

Innovation Latency (Rosemann, 2012)

Business Analysis Latency describes the time taken to analyse the data and turn it into actionable information. In other words, lesser the time between the start of the data analysis and the change brought as a result of the change, higher the value of the Business Intelligence Solution.

There are two types of BPM: exploitative and explorative.  Exploitative BPM is a reactive, problem-focused and transactional innovation in nature, while explorative BPM is a pro-active, opportunity-focused and transformational innovation.  A transactional leader emphasises on the work in hand and drives performance to achieve within the limited time and resources (Tighe, 2012). They focus more on results for today.  On the other hand, a transformational leader inspires, engages, and encourages his or her employees to do better and beyond the assigned task. They are process and productivity oriented.

Depending on the resources and time, and personal nature, a leader may choose to be a transactional or transformational. Which one would you prefer as an innovating leader of your field?
